Starting the Day Off Right at the Children’s Residential Program
The Positive Morning Routine of the Young Men Supported in Lido Beach
Before the school day begins, the young men at the Children’s Residential Program in Lido Beach enjoy a calm, structured morning together.
Rojeh Samouhi likes planning his weekend schedule. Communicating on his iPad, Rojeh shared he was especially looking forward to visiting Dunkin’ Donuts. Over in the living room, the television was on as three housemates watched a program together on the couch.
When there’s time, a few of the young men enjoy starting their day with morning exercise – whether it’s a walk, bike ride, or time on the tire swing in the backyard.
Manager Marquisha Dawson explained that everyone wakes up between 6:45 and 7 a.m. while staff prepares a nutritious breakfast. Fruit, eggs, French toast, juice, and water are favorites.
After the Morning Rush
After finishing their morning routine, the students leave for the Children’s Education Center in Brookville. A few of the young men enjoy listening to music on their devices, while others prefer to listen to the radio playing with staff. Some enjoy the car ride, looking out the window and taking in the scenic views of Long Island’s south shore, while others aren’t fans of sitting in traffic.
“They know what they want to do. They know how they want to do it. It’s us that need to catch up to them,” said Marquisha.
Once staff drop off the students at school, they return to the Lido Beach residence to tidy up and prepare for the afternoon. Meanwhile, Marquisha works on administrative duties while the house is quiet.
“The staff is so compassionate and kind,” Marquisha said. “We look out and make sure that the young men are safe and happy.”
Sean Stallings, the Director of the Children’s Residential Program, praised the team work of Marquisha, Overnight Manager Raymond Smith, and House 28 staff members Monique Tackling, Brianna Costello, Ashley Cesario, and Matthew Orelus.
“The consistency of seeing the same faces Monday through Friday and knowing what to expect each morning makes a real difference for these young men,” Sean said.
