Brookville Center For Children Services

BCCS Provides Preschool Special Education Services

Brookville Center for Children’s Services (BCCS) is committed to nurturing each child’s well-being and joy in learning. We address academic, social, emotional, and therapeutic needs, setting a positive foundation for learning.

BCCS is approved by the NYS Education Department and the Department of Health to deliver assessments, education, and therapy to preschoolers aged 2.9 – 5 who are experiencing a developmental delay or disability. A referral from the child’s local school district’s Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) is required to receive services through BCCS.

Our Preschool Classroom Structure and Curriculum

The Creative Curriculum

The Creative Curriculum is a nurturing and research-backed approach guided by the interests of each student. It encourages critical thinking through investigation and project-based learning. It is interdisciplinary, weaving in math and literacy, all driven through play.

The STAR Program

The STAR Program (Strategies for Teaching based on Autism Research) is a school-centered system designed to equip children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) with essential skills for success in both academic and community settings. It implements evidence-based practices within classrooms, yielding better outcomes for students with autism compared to programs relying solely on independently developed curricula.

Handwriting Without Tears (HWT)

Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) is a special program designed for pre-K children to learn writing in a fun and engaging way. It focuses on building prewriting skills and utilizes activities such as music, movement, letter play, and hands-on materials like wooden pieces and Play-Doh. This helps develop both gross and fine motor skills while creating a sensory-rich learning experience.

OUr Perspectives and Objectives

Understanding the Classroom Experience

Throughout the year, BCCS enhances a child’s development through engagement in language-based groups, creative art projects, interactive computer software, music, movement, sensory play, structured play, socialization, physical education, and various motor activities.

These components are all intentionally designed to foster holistic progress and prepare the child to return to their school district for school-age education.

School hours are 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, and follow a 12-month academic calendar. Our class sizes are small, ranging from 6 to 12 students. The classroom ratios are (# of students, # of teachers, # of teacher aides) 12:1:2, 10:1:2, 9:1:3, 8:1:2, 6:1:2 and 6:1:3.5*.

*This enables teachers to better tailor their instruction to the unique needs of each child and adjust their teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and individual pacing. The smaller class size also ensures each child’s development is nurtured effectively.

Taking the Next Step:
Guiding Your Child Beyond Preschool

We are very proud to share that over 90% of our preschool students graduate from our programs and return to their home school districts to continue their education. As these young learners move to the next phase of their education, we remain happy and ready to support the parents and the child as they take these next steps.

For students whose educational needs cannot be met by their school districts, BCCS School Age Special Education at the Children’s Education Center in Brookville could be a valuable resource for families to consider, ask questions, and visit.
