Scholastic Book Fair Visits Marcus Avenue
During the week of April 7, Marcus Avenue team members, along with the school’s Parents Association (PA), set up shelves and tables and stocked them full of popular titles, accessories, and playful collectibles from Scholastic.
The school hosts the longstanding book fair twice a year, in the fall and spring, to introduce preschoolers to the joy of reading. The book fairs are organized and run by PA volunteers as a fundraising event.
In-demand titles from this year’s shelves featured well-loved cartoon characters Bluey and Pete the Cat. Another sell-out was “Maya’s Holi” by Thrity Umrigar illustrated by Kamala Nair, a book about a young child visiting her grandparents in India. The book captivated students with its vibrant colors of blue, red, and purple.
Though only 3 to 5 years old, and just beginning their reading journey, Marcus Avenue students were thrilled to visit the book fair, pick up the books pre-ordered by their parents, and browse others that caught their eye.
While they may not yet be able to read independently, the students still enjoy storytime. In fact, Marcus Avenue maintains a fully stocked library for teachers to explore and share with their classes, making reading a fundamental activity the students grow to enjoy.
Besides enticing students with the promise of fun and adventure hidden between the pages, the book fair also gives parent volunteers a chance to see their children in action at school: walking through the halls, connecting with classmates, and fully engaged in an environment that was completely foreign to them just a year or two ago.
“I recognize this class. That’s my son’s class,” said PA volunteer Rossy Solis as her son passed by. “I told him if he sees me, he can say hi.”
When Rossy’s son Johnathan saw his mom, he waved and then turned his focus back to his friends.
The book fair is Rossy’s favorite activity since joining the PA. She loves that the event offers the opportunity to get to know school staff and the daily routine of the children at school.
While this is the last book fair of the 2024/2025 school year, the PA is not slowing down. They have a full line up of activities to round out the year. In May, students will enjoy a Mother’s Day plant sale and a fun in-school planting activity. Plus, the PA is bringing back the ever popular bubble show.
