Walking For a Great Cause

5 members of BCCS teams at the AHRC Foundation WalkBCCS community takes part in AHRC Foundation Walk

On the morning of Sunday, Nov. 2, the BCCS community joined over 1,100 walkers for the 44th annual AHRC Foundation Walk, raising over $96,000 in support of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

This year’s Walk comes at a critical time, as nonprofit service providers like BCCS face challenging cuts to Medicaid, which funds early intervention, speech language therapy, occupational therapy, and other essential supports for children with developmental disabilities and delays.

Together, nearly 100 teams stepped forward to raise awareness and champion inclusion and opportunity for children and adults with IDD. Among the walkers were young men and women supported by the Children’s Residential Program, their families, and staff, including Tyler Lao and his mother Leng, who fundraised over $2,800 through their fundraising team Go Ty Ty!

“We’re very blessed with all our friends and family who support the walk and believe in this cause,” said Leng. “This is the only fundraiser I ask family and friends to donate to. I ask people to do it because my son is using all the services. We know where the money goes.”

Another standout team was Mighty-Marcus, who raised over $1,900. Led by Team Captain Christine Mikowski, the team of Marcus Avenue Preschool staff and friends showed strong support.

To every walker and the nearly 100 volunteers who made the day possible—thank you for joining us under the banner, “Moving ahead, leaving no one behind.” See you next year for another unforgettable walk!
