Growing Saturday Respite Offers More Opportunities to Learn
On July 5, the Saturday Respite Program at the Children’s Education Center welcomed 31 students to an expanded line-up of activities. A new classroom and three new respite counselors gave the students more opportunities to learn, play and explore.
“With more staff we were able to open up a younger group at the start of the summer program,” Christine Paz, program coordinator of the Saturday Respite Program said. “The students have more play options added to their Saturday schedule such as gym, cooking, art, sensory activities, playground or even take walks at the farm.”
During a typical day at Saturday Respite, children have the option to draw, paint, or participate in activities at the gym. Cooking sessions take place right in the classroom where they’ve made sweet treats like ice cream sandwiches and sundaes, or follow easy recipes they decide on as a group.
At the gym, students can play basketball, riding bikes and jumping around in the bounce house.
At times they take part in special programing, such as a puppet theatre, music group or LED light show. With plenty of options available in and around the building, children can find different types of activities to enjoy throughout the day.
With Wheatley Farms & Arts Center just up the hill, counselors sometimes accompany students to visit the goats, ducks, and horses.
Over the summer, students also enjoyed two classes on sidewalk chalk art and popsicle pandemonium, where students created colorful artwork with popsicles, stickers, and cotton balls. At the farm, students can stroll through the sensory garden and pick lavender and chamomile flowers. Also available is the option to tour the farm and see the animals or enjoy a moment by the meditation garden.
“We still have plenty of activities to do at school, but what could be better than spending summertime in nature,” Christine said. “With classes and farm tours just nearby, our students have more fun things to do on their special Saturday.”
