Marcus Avenue Preschool Prioritizes Mental Health This May
To “Bee Positive” and highlight the power of positive self-talk, Marcus Avenue Preschool staff shared and displayed affirmations in bumblebee-shaped cutouts. This and other fun, self-care activities were organized by Lisa Kaplan, a Social Worker at Marcus Avenue Preschool, for Mental Health Awareness Month in May.
Through fun and uplifting activities, Lisa aimed to reduce stigma and create an environment where students and teachers felt comfortable discussing challenges.
“With this month’s focus on mental health, I wanted to create an environment where no one feels alone in their struggle,” said Lisa. “Whether through schoolwide activities or sharing useful tips, my goal was to make sure everyone felt supported.”
Spirit Weeks for All
Throughout May, Lisa led spirit weeks designed to meet the needs of both students and staff.
For students, themes were playful and engaging, with theme days such as Tropical Tuesdays and Wellness Wednesdays. On Tropical Tuesday, students brightened up the gloomy weather with floral shirts and dresses, even beach wear. These wellness days encouraged preschoolers to express their creativity and individuality.
To support staff, Lisa delivered a presentation on mental health strategies, offering tools for managing challenges and overcoming obstacles. Lisa shared the importance of prioritizing mental health and how talking about mental health creates an environment where people feel safe and supported.
Staff were invited to participate in activities including Mindful Mondays promoting mini-meditation sessions; Game Day Tuesdays to share a laugh over games like Heads Up and Catch Phrase; Dance Party Thursdays; and Positive Vibe Fridays where people wore t-shirts with positive messages.
Thank you to Lisa for making Mental Health Awareness Month an energizing experience for the entire Marcus Avenue Preschool community!
