Reading Across America at Post Avenue
Reading Across America Week is celebrated in all of Brookville Center for Children’s Services school programs. At Post Avenue, teachers and teacher assistants (TAs) organized activities and a spirit week to make reading fun and engaging for students.
Reading Across America Week takes place around Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2. Teachers use the occasion to read aloud the author’s most popular books during storytime and highlight fundamentals including rhyming, enunciation, and comprehension.
Spirit Week started off strongly with Silly Hat Day. Next up was Music Day, for which teachers assigned homework to prepare students for the planned activity.
“They all brought in an instrument, it was so cute,” Special Education Teacher Eileen Carter said. “They showed off the instruments they brought from home, and they played a tune. Then they told us what tune it was, and we all sang along.”
On Character Day, students came dressed as their favorite book character and were encouraged to bring an accompanying book to share. A young lady came in a lovely blue dress showcasing the beloved cartoon character, Bluey, and held up the corresponding flip book she was excited to read in class.
Cat in the Hat Day was a special thrill. Students and teachers wore red, white, and black with some even sporting the famed character’s iconic striped top hat. Among the books on the reading list for the day were “The Cat in The Hat,” “Horton Hears a Who!,” “Green Eggs and Ham,” and “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.”
During the readings students modeled the words after their teachers, practiced their pronunciation thanks to the many repeated words in Dr. Seuss’s works, and laughed at the comical scenes. They also took home rhyming exercises to complete with their parents.
All this excitement makes Reading Across America Week one of the most anticipated and memorable weeks students have at school.
