Staff Spotlight: Cynthia Tanis-Innocent Helps Students Break Out of Their Shell
For three years now, Cynthia Tanis-Innocent, Special Education Teacher Assistant, has been a steady source of support and positivity at Post Avenue Preschool.
Working with children is more than just a job for Cynthia—it’s a calling. With more than a decade of experience, Cynthia has developed a deep understanding of the unique needs of students as well as how to create an atmosphere where every child feels valued and encouraged to thrive. Even while pursuing a degree in health care management, she worked in education supporting teachers at Bright Horizons and within the New York City Public Schools. These early roles gave her a strong foundation in providing personalized support and building meaningful connections, skills she now brings to her work at Post Avenue.
Cynthia began work at Post Avenue Preschool in 2021. She quickly adjusted to the teaching styles, learning the Strategies for Teaching Based on Autism Research (STAR) curriculum and guidelines for providing one-to-one support. She progressed in her role and earned the New York State Education Department Level III Teaching Assistant Certificate in 2023.
Cynthia was named a BCCS “Employee of the Quarter,” in early 2025. Her colleagues praised her for being dependable and a joy to work with—an acknowledgement that took her by surprise.
“I was happy and felt all the emotions,” Cynthia said. “I try to make sure that everyone is content at work.”
Her success supporting students, especially in in helping them find their voice, stems from her focus on maintaining an engaged approach.
“The more I’m present, the more I can engage with students,” said Cynthia. “I want to teach them to be aware of their surroundings, help them communicate, and realize that school is fun.”
For Cynthia, the best learning comes in partnership with parents. Her advice to reinforcing lessons at school is learning through play at home.
“Try to have fun with your children. It can be at a park or even in your backyard. It helps them develop play skills and deepens your bond,” said Cynthia.
Looking ahead, Cynthia sees herself growing into her role in special education, considering taking the leap to Special Education Teacher. In the meantime, Cynthia continues to support students to reach their learning goals at Post Avenue Preschool every day.
Thank you for all you do, Cynthia!
