Brookville Center for Children’s Services (BCCS) provides specialized educational and therapeutic programs for children with developmental disabilities, communication challenges, and learning delays from birth through age 22. With three locations in Nassau County and a range of home and community-based services, we work in partnership with families to support the whole child: academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally.
Our dedicated staff meets each child where they are, using developmentally appropriate strategies and individualized support that reflect each student’s unique learning style, needs, and strengths.
Special Education Programs
Every Child Learns Differently
Classrooms at Brookville Center are structured to support learning, communication, and personal growth. Instruction is individualized and evidence-based, delivered in small groups by a team of trained educators and therapists who work closely with families to support each child’s progress. Eligibility for services is determined through the local school district’s Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) or Committee on Special Education (CSE).
Our programs are approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED), the Department of Health (DOH), and the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS). We follow New York State Learning Standards and implement research-backed curricula tailored to the unique needs of children with developmental delays and disabilities.
Age-Specific Programs
Children are grouped by age and developmental profile to create learning environments that are socially and educationally appropriate.
Early Intervention (Birth – Age 3)
Early Intervention services support infants and toddlers (birth to 3 years) with suspected developmental delays. Services include Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech/Language Therapy, Family Training, home-based visits, and caregiver support.
Preschool Special Education (Ages 2.9 – 5)
Four preschools across Nassau County serve young children with developmental delays or diagnosed disabilities. Each classroom supports 6 to 12 students, offering a structured setting that builds communication, social skills, early learning foundations, and physical development. Instruction draws from Creative Curriculum, STAR, and Handwriting Without Tears to support a well-rounded preschool experience.
School Age Special Education (Ages 5-22)
School-age instruction is provided year-round at the two schools that make up the Children's Education Center on our Brookville campus. This full-day, 12-month program serves students with developmental disabilities through structured, individualized instruction.
Each classroom is led by a team of certified teachers, therapists, and support professionals who work together to foster growth across academic, communication, social, and daily living domains. Students are grouped by age and developmental profile and follow evidence-based curricula—including STAR—designed to support progress in ways that are meaningful to each child and their family.
Transitioning Out of School (Begins at Age 14)
Beginning at age 14, students at the Children's Education Center receive structured support to prepare for life after school. Transition planning is tailored to each student's individual needs and goals, with a focus on developing skills that foster greater independence.
On campus, students have access to a PAES (Practical Assessment Exploration System) Lab, where they explore a range of job tasks and work-related skills in a supportive setting. A model apartment provides daily living instruction, helping students learn to manage basic household routines. Students also participate in community-based experiences—such as travel training, shopping, and volunteer outings—that help build confidence and readiness for adult life.
