Round Hill Road Welcomes Students in the New Year

A teacher at Round Hill Road school points to the display she created in her new classroom.Monday, January 12 marked the first day of school at Brookville Center for Children’s Services’ (BCCS) Round Hill Road, as preschool students arrived eager to explore their new setting and begin the year together. From large classrooms to new learning and play areas, the building supports the needs of young students while maintaining consistency in their learning experience.

Behind the scenes, weeks of planning and preparation made the transition possible. While students enjoyed their holiday break with family and friends, teachers and staff worked to prepare classrooms, hallways, and shared spaces for the school’s opening.

As a former elementary school, The Round Hill Road campus offers expanded space to support the program’s established routines while allowing room for growth. The campus includes dedicated areas for clinical services such as occupational and physical therapy, a gym for movement and dance therapy, and two outdoor play areas that support motor-focused play.

A display at Round Hill Road reads "Amazing things happen here!"“As exciting as a new setting can be, our focus was on continuity,” said Paula DeVita, Director of Round Hill Road. “We wanted students and families to feel at ease from day one, knowing the routines, relationships, and care they rely on were staying the same.”

Preparing students for the transition began well before the move. Teachers used social stories developed by the program’s psychologists and social workers to help students understand what to expect. These stories reinforced an important message: while the building and classrooms were changing, the teachers and staff they know and trust would remain the same. Families were also given the stories to review at home, helping children feel comfortable and confident as the move approached.
