Barbara C. Wilson Preschool Students Enjoy a Sensory-Friendly Movie Theater Experience
On January 11, Barbara C. Wilson Preschool classmates and their families came together for a sensory-friendly screening of the movie “Sing” at the Bellmore Playhouse, hosted by the BCW Parents Association (PA).
“Our Parents Association has been setting up different meetup events for our children to participate in and interact with one another outside of school,” said BCW PA member Ali Parks. “We wanted to create a safe and welcoming environment for our children to enjoy a movie, for many, this is their first time in the movie theater.”
To make the screening sensory-friendly, the house lights were dimmed. Additionally, trailers were removed. Also, the volume was minimized to reduce sensory overload.
“The relaxed atmosphere allowed for movement and vocalizations, making the experience more enjoyable and less restrictive,” Ali said. “Best of all, the audience was allowed to move around, talk, dance, and “Sing!”
The admission price included the movie, soda and popcorn. The PA provided additional options of juice boxes and cheddar puffs.
Over 60 people signed up for the successful event, with many of them already expressing interest in arranging a sensory-friendly movie in the future. Parents were amazed with their children who, throughout the movie, remained engaged, happy and entertained.
“Some were emotional at how well their children did,” Ali said. “We were blown away by the amazing response and so grateful to see so many children and their families enjoying this new experience in an inclusive environment.”
Parents and children alike left the movie theater happy. Students had a great time watching the movie with their friends. Meanwhile, parents could relax and gauge their children’s ability to enjoy similar events.
“Everyone was so proud of their children for trying something new and doing so well at it,” Ali said.
Great job to the BCW Parents Association for planning and hosting a successful event!
