Meet Marjorie Guerrier, Medical DSP
Marjorie Guerrier has been a Direct Support Professional (DSP) with the Children’s Residential Program (CRP) since 2017 and transitioned to a Medical DSP role in 2019. She works at the Wantagh residence, aptly called “the girl’s house,” that six young women call home.
The CRP is an intermediate care facility (ICF) for children with autism enrolled with BCCS.
She came across the role online after a friend mentioned a listing for DSPs at the Seaspray residences in Lido Beach. During her first year, Marjorie worked with the boys in Lido Beach and quickly learned the different needs and requirements for assisting children with autism.
“We do a lot with them. We don’t just come in to take them to the movies. We teach them,” said Marjorie.“We teach them how to brush, and do the laundry, and we cook together. We prepare them to be on their own so that they are no longer kids. They are mature.”
As a DSP, Marjorie found that she was taking on more responsibilities than her previous role as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
“When I first started, I didn’t know I had to give meds. I took an AMAP class to start giving meds. I had to take a class on insulin class to administer insulin. I had to learn a lot.”
So far, Marjorie loves her work supporting the children in Wantagh. She wants the world to know that the ladies she supports are smart and kind hearted. From them, she’s learned to be more patient, caring, and present with the people in her life.
